No puppet!

Оскар за лучший документальный фильм получил в этом году фильм Icarus молодого режиссера Брайана Фогеля, вскрывшего российский допинговый скандал. В повальном допинге на олимпиаде в Сочи метельный менталитет загнанной крысы преломляется особенно своеобразно. Чудовищная несправедливость, для борьбы с которой не оставалось никакого другого выхода, кроме жульничанья, случилась бы, по всей видимости, если бы Россия, потратив рекордные $50 миллиардов на олимпиаду, не заняла первого места в таблице.

Icarus выиграл у четырех других фильмов, номинироваршихся на Оскар. Преступная деятельность путинского режима упоминалась по крайней мере еще в одном из них, фильме Last Men in Aleppo сирийского режиссерa Ферас Файадa, посвященном войне в Сирии и добровольческой организации Белые Каски (White Helmets). До этого британский фильм The White Helmets получил Оскар в 2017 за лучший короткометражный документальный фильм.



The film focuses on Khaled Omar Harrah, Mahmoud Al-Hattar, and Subhi Alhussen, members of the White Helmets—the civilian first-responders who have devoted their lives to saving as many people as possible from government bombings and terrorist attacks.
The film’s striking visuals are fleshed out by an equally impressive soundscape, one best explained by the aforementioned finger-rubbing exercise. It is nuanced enough that audiences can hear the difference between a hand caressing a cheek and an aid worker touching a wound on a child’s head, or between Syrian jets and Russian jets. The distinction is important; as Fayyad explained to Vanity Fair, the Syrian jets are Russia’s old planes. So as bombs come down on civilians, they know exactly who is trying to murder them in that moment. “You can hear the stones and the metal,” Fayyad says. “And you can hear the touch of the human body—the softness and the hardness as opposites. Every day, this is the environment of the sound there.”
