Mr. Giuliani was an enthusiastic fan of “The Sopranos,” once joking that HBO set its celebrated series about an everyday mob family in New Jersey because he had done such a good job driving the Mafia out of New York.
During Mr. Giuliani’s days as a United States attorney, his office was labeled the “House of Pancakes” for the parade of suspects who “flipped” to try to reduce their prison sentences.
https://www.nytimes.com/2018/08/23/us/politics/trump-vocabulary-mob.html
During the day, I was in court as Mutolo testified, spilling the secrets of the Mafia’s reign of death and crime, while my evenings were spent meeting with Sammy the Bull Gravano in a safe house controlled by the United States Marshals Service. Gravano had previously testified in Brooklyn federal court against family boss John Gotti, where defense lawyers made much of his involvement in nineteen homicides. Sammy the Bull didn’t know it, but part of our strategy was to present the Mob killers in such a way that the jury would actually be bored with the details of Mob murders by the time Gravano, our star witness, hit the stand. Our hope was that this would make Gravano more palatable to the jury.
Gravano, though, saw this as a bit of professional embarrassment. One evening I walked into a safe-house conference room. Gravano threw a New York tabloid onto the table before me with a look of disgust. He had been reading an article about the grim body count of our Sicilian killer witnesses, which was far higher than his own. Pointing at the paper, Gravano barked, “Jesus, Jimmy, you’re makin’ me look like a fuckin’ schoolgirl.”
Thanks to the work of dozens of investigators and prosecutors, La Cosa Nostra’s grip on unions was broken, its leaders jailed, and its dominance on both sides of the Atlantic shattered. John Gambino’s trial jury actually hung 11–1 on all the most serious charges, in suspicious circumstances, but he pled guilty before his retrial, was sentenced to fifteen years in federal prison, and has since died. There are still people in New York who call themselves Italian Mafia, but it is a motley collection of low-level criminals that would embarrass Lucky Luciano. It more closely resembles The Sopranos, without the therapist.

The officials, who asked not to be identifed, said the United States Attorney in Manhattan, Rudolph W. Giuliani, ended a jurisdictional conflict when he agreed that Mr. Maloney's office should oversee the new case against Mr. Gotti, who is said to be the chief of the Gambino organized-crime family.
In coming months, Federal prosecutors intend to present evidence to a grand jury in Brooklyn, charging Mr. Gotti with violating the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act, according to the officials. The main accusation, they said, will be that Mr. Gotti is running a criminal enterprise - the Gambino crime family. Because the new case against Mr. Gotti involves allegations of crimes and conspiracies in different boroughs of the city and its suburbs, Mr. Maloney and Mr. Giuliani had overlapping jurisdiction, officials said. Mr. Maloney is the United States Attorney for the Eastern District of the state, which covers Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island and Long Island. Mr. Giuliani prosecutes in the Southern District, Manhattan, the Bronx and the northern suburbs.
Mr. Giuliani's office began a preliminary investigation of Mr. Gotti in the spring after secretly recorded tapes were turned over by the State Organized Crime Task Force, officials said. In March, after Mr. Gotti was acquitted in Brooklyn on Federal charges of being the head of a crew in the Gambino family, Mr. Maloney sought jurisdiction in the newly developing racketeering case, they added.

A short time later, with a serious look on his face, he said, “I need loyalty. I expect loyalty.”
During the silence that followed, I didn’t move, speak, or change my facial expression in any way. The president of the United States just demanded the FBI director’s loyalty. This was surreal. <...> To my mind, the demand was like Sammy the Bull’s Cosa Nostra induction ceremony—with Trump, in the role of the family boss, asking me if I have what it takes to be a “made man.” <...>
I had never seen anything like it in the Oval Office. As I found myself thrust into the Trump orbit, I once again was having flashbacks to my earlier career as a prosecutor against the Mob. The silent circle of assent. The boss in complete control. The loyalty oaths. The us-versus-them worldview. The lying about all things, large and small, in service to some code of loyalty that put the organization above morality and above the truth.

Rudy and Donald first got together in the late 1980s shortly before Donald became a co-chair of Giuliani's first fundraiser for his 1989 mayoral campaign, sitting on the Waldorf dais and steering $41,000 to the campaign. A year earlier, Tony Lombardi, the federal agent closest to then-U.S. Attorney Giuliani, opened a probe of Trump's role in the suspect sale of two Trump Tower apartments to Robert Hopkins, the mob-connected head of the city's largest gambling ring.
Trump attended the closing himself and Hopkins arrived with a briefcase loaded with up to $200,000 in cash, a deposit the soon-to-felon counted at the table. Despite Hopkins' wholesale lack of verifiable income or assets, he got a loan from a Jersey bank that did business with Trump's casino. A Trump limo delivered the cash to the bank.
The government subsequently nailed Hopkins' mortgage broker, Frank LaMagra, on an unrelated charge and he offered to give up Donald, claiming Trump "participated" in the money-laundering — and volunteering to wear a wire on him.
Instead, Lombardi, who discussed the case with Giuliani personally (and with me for a 1993 Village Voice piece called "The Case of the Missing Case"), went straight to Donald for two hour-long interviews with him. Within weeks of the interviews, Donald announced he'd raise $2 million in a half hour if Rudy ran for mayor. Lamagra got no deal and was convicted, as was his mob associate, Louis (Louie HaHa) Attanasio, who was later also nailed for seven underworld murders. Hopkins was convicted of running his gambling operation partly out of the Trump Tower apartment, where he was arrested.

Strangely enough, his cash cow was city-owned parking lots by the water, which were leased by the Bureau of Marine and Aviation, and he controlled the companies that had the parking lots that were city-owned. And it was just an enormous amount of money. He never paid any taxes. He pretended to have no income. He had an incredible cash empire. And the guy who actually leased those parking lots to him, Rick Mazzeo, wound up under federal investigation, and they found his body in the trunk of a car. And all he did was give parking lots to Roy Cohn. That’s what he did for a living.
https://www.democracynow.org/2016/7/5/trumps_greatest_mentor_was_red_baiting
According to the complaints filed by U.S. Attorney Rudolph W. Giuliani, Cohn owes taxes, interest and penalties dating back to 1959. In 1967, the complaints allege, Cohn bought a Manhattan town house and transferred title to an "alter ego" called the "39 East 68th Street Corporation." Cohn paid the mortgage through "fraudulent" fund transfers, the complaints allege.
According to the charges, Bolan, other colleagues and the law firm "knowingly concealed" Cohn's interest to help him avoid federal tax liens.
A similar scheme was set up for Cohn's Greenwich home, according to the complaints.
Cohn's battles over the years with tax collectors and bill collectors have been highly publicized. In two 1978 tax court agreements, Cohn acknowledged owing $233,268 in federal taxes, but when the IRS came to collect, it found no assets in his name.
Cohn's extravagant and well-publicized life style was supported by a $500,000 annual expense account provided by his law firm instead of a salary, the government charged.
Cohn has used the no-assets, no-income defense to avoid paying more than $500,000 in back taxes claimed by New York state and New York City. In addition, he has yet to pay court judgments of $5.2 million in private civil suits.

http://knigosite.org/library/read/11054

A 1994 FBI report obtained by The Associated Press said Kislin is “a member or associate” of a Brighton Beach crime group run by Vyacheslav Ivankov, the imprisoned godfather of Russian organized crime in the United States.
Asked about Kislin’s appointment to the EDC, mayoral spokeswoman Sunny Mindel said, “He was appointed in 1996. These are allegations, and allegations that emerged two days ago.”
Giuliani, a former federal prosecutor, said he doesn’t know anything about Kislin’s alleged Russian mob ties.
“I know Mr. Kislin. I know his wife. In the last 2 ½ years, they’ve made no contributions to me, at least as far as my records are concerned,” said Giuliani.
“I’m not aware of any of the allegations involving them. I think the report is wishful thinking on the part of the people who are trying to put it out.”
Giuliani said Kislin hasn’t donated to any of his other campaign funds since his 1997 re-election.
Yet a program from a May 14, 1998, Giuliani fund-raiser lists Kislin and his wife, Ludmilla, as “co-chairs.” Kislin also was listed as a co-chair of Giuliani’s main Senate fund-raiser last May 25, which took in $2.1 million.

Make America Number 1, the pro-Trump super-PAC controlled by hedge-fund billionaire Robert Mercer and his daughter Rebekah, has paid law firms associated with Rudy Giuliani $563,003 in 2015 and 2016.
The PAC, originally called Keep the Promise 1, supported Ted Cruz before shifting to Donald Trump after he secured the Republican nomination this spring. It began paying Bracewell & Giuliani for legal and compliance services in June of 2015, making $336,495 in payments until February 14, 2016. It stopped using Bracewell a couple of weeks after Giuliani left the firm in January.
https://www.thedailybeast.com/donald-trumps-billionaire-backed-super-pac-also-paying-rudy-giulianis-law-firms
It’s an odd group which mixes Islam, Marxism and neocon-inflected DC Pay-to-Play values into a bizarre amalgam run by current cult leader Maryam Rajavi. Until just a few years ago the US State Department listed them as a terrorist organization. They appear to be mainly out of the terrorism business now. But they’re still a treacherous and dangerous group. With all this you’ll be glad to learn that one of their biggest backers is none other than Trump National Security Advisor John Bolton. And perhaps they’re most high profile and ardent supporter (and recipient of their cash) is Rudy Giuliani.

Date: 2018-08-27 07:21 pm (UTC)
According to New York corporate records, Arik Kislin is chairman of Blonde Management Corp., 459 W. 15th St. in Manhattan. In the early 1990s, Blonde shared space with Trans Commodities and co-sponsored the person alleged by law enforcement agencies to be a hit man, Anton Malevskiy, for the US visa, according to the 1994 FBI report. Malevskiy, an acknowledged friend of the Chernoys, also is reputed to be the head of one of Russia's top mob families, Moscow's Izmaylovo gang.
http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1785427/posts
Hamptons-hopping businessman Arik Kislin was one of three people “authorized to give [financial] instructions” to a company in Liechtenstein now identified as a front for the Ismailovskaya organized-crime group, according to law-enforcement officials and court documents from three countries obtained by The Post.
It’s not the first time Kislin has been linked to the Russian mob — but the documents allege a new crucial role for him in it.
According to the papers, only Kislin, Anton Malevsky — then the reputed godfather of the mob group — and Malevsky’s brother Andrei exercised control over the illicit gang’s front operation, called the Trenton Business Corp.
“The ‘war chest’ of the [mob] organization was the Trenton Business Corporation,” a German court ruled at a criminal money-laundering trial in Stuttgart in 2010. “Today, the gang is engaged in robberies, extortion shakedowns, drug and weapons dealing, as well as illegal prostitution and money laundering,” the panel of three judges wrote.

Date: 2018-08-27 07:36 pm (UTC)
Co-owner of the Gansevoort Hotel Group, and successful businessman, Arik Kislin, was honored last week by the New York State Police Chiefs Benevolent Association.
Mr. Kislin has been an active supporter of the association for many years, and was recognized for both his service to community and business success. He was honored alongside Howard Lorber of Douglas Elliman, as well as many others.
https://blogs.timesofisrael.com/co-owner-of-the-gansevoort-hotel-group-arik-kislin-honored-by-new-york-state-police-chiefs-benevolent-association/
Businessman and investor Howard Lorber already donated $100,000 to the Trump Victory fund, has been named as one of Trump’s “best friends” and even appeared once on “The Apprentice.” He is also president and chief executive of the Vector Group, a holding company that has various business interests in Russia. In 1996, Lorber brought Trump to Moscow to look for opportunities for Trump to lend his famous name to development projects there.
“Howard has major investments in Russia,” Trump told Russian politician Alexander Ivanovich Lebed after his trip to Moscow with Lorber, according to a 1997 profile of Trump in the New Yorker. “See, they don’t know you,” Trump told Lorber. “With all that investment, they don’t know you. Trump they know.”
At that time, Trump and Lorber were discussing Trump building a huge luxury residential tower in Moscow as part of a project owned by a subsidiary of Lorber’s firm. The project never took off, but it was only one in a long line of projects Trump tried to start in Russia during his string of visits there dating back to the time of the Soviet Union.

Mr. Trump is also said to be close to his family: his third wife, Melania, and his children Donald Jr., 38; Ivanka, 34; and Eric, 32.

One of Calk’s contacts in New York was Howard Lorber, the wealthy CEO of the holding company Vector Group and a longtime friend of the future president.
Lorber’s firm made a seven-digit investment in The Federal Savings Bank, according to testimony that Calk provided in 2015. The Federal Savings Bank also entered into a partnership in 2014 with Douglas Elliman Real Estate, a New York-based brokerage firm that is controlled by Vector’s real estate subsidiary.
Calk said in a press release at the time that the deal represented an opportunity to finance more than $12 billion in annual real estate sales.
But after Douglas Elliman employees complained that the bank’s rates were uncompetitive and loans were taking too long to close, Calk’s relationship with Lorber soured. As part of an ensuing court case, Lorber said that Calk had not been transparent with him. <...>
Despite their falling-out, Calk and Lorber were both named to Trump’s 14-member economic advisory council on Aug. 5, 2016.

Date: 2018-08-28 01:01 pm (UTC)
Mr. Sapir (pronounced suh-PEER), 52, left the Soviet Union in 1973 with a wave of Jewish immigrants. He landed in New York in 1976, where he drove a cab for three years before borrowing $10,000 against his taxi medallion to open a small electronics store. The store, at 200 Fifth Avenue in the Flatiron neighborhood, became a wholesale outlet for Soviet diplomats, K.G.B. agents and Politburo members.
The contacts Mr. Sapir made in New York proved a boon when the Soviet Union collapsed. By the early 1990's, Mr. Sapir said, he was trading container loads of consumer electronics for multimillion-dollar oil contracts.
''He cultivated people who came to the U.S. looking for a friendly person with whom they could deal,'' said Peter Pettibone, who was a lawyer for the U.S.-U.S.S.R. Trade and Economic Council, which is defunct.
Mr. Sapir emerged on the New York real estate scene in 1994 with a pile of cash, eager to buy in a market devastated by a recession and corporate layoffs. He bought 2 Broadway a year later for $20.5 million. By 1999, the property was worth more than $200 million.
''The guy made some brilliant real estate investments,'' said Darcy Stacom, a real estate broker at Cushman & Wakefield who sold Mr. Sapir four buildings in the mid-1990's.
