Within hours of opening an investigation into the Trump campaign’s ties to Russia in the summer of 2016, the F.B.I. dispatched a pair of agents to London on a mission so secretive that all but a handful of officials were kept in the dark.
Their assignment, which has not been previously reported, was to meet the Australian ambassador, who had evidence that one of Donald J. Trump’s advisers knew in advance about Russian election meddling. After tense deliberations between Washington and Canberra, top Australian officials broke with diplomatic protocol and allowed the ambassador, Alexander Downer, to sit for an F.B.I. interview to describe his meeting with the campaign adviser, George Papadopoulos.
The agents summarized their highly unusual interview and sent word to Washington on Aug. 2, 2016, two days after the investigation was opened. Their report helped provide the foundation for a case that, a year ago Thursday, became the special counsel investigation. But at the time, a small group of F.B.I. officials knew it by its code name: Crossfire Hurricane.

In public statements, Cohen has said that he informed Trump the deal was dead in January 2016, but new records show he was still working on it with Sater at least into June. In May, six weeks before the Republican National Convention in Cleveland, Sater asked Cohen when he and Trump would go to Moscow. In a text message, Cohen replied: “MY trip before Cleveland. Trump once he becomes the nominee after the convention.”
Throughout the nine-month effort, Sater, who was born in the Soviet Union and worked for years as an undercover source for US intelligence agencies and the FBI, told Cohen he had connections to top Russian officials and businessmen: Arkady and Boris Rotenberg, brothers who grew up with Putin and were considered his “shadow cabinet”; Andrey Molchanov, a billionaire Russian politician Sater was introduced to by a close personal friend, who proposed building the tower on his property; and a former member of Russia’s military intelligence to whom Sater passed photographs of Cohen’s passport to obtain a visa.
Whatever the significance of the negotiations to the election, the men took measures to keep the plans secret. Text messages often ended with a simple “call me.” They communicated, at times, via Dust, a secure, encrypted messaging application. Sater once warned that they “gotta keep this quiet.”

The country’s top government and finance officials would gather at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, Sater said, and Peskov “wants to meet there with you and possibly introduce you to either Putin or Medvedev.”
“The entire business class of Russia will be there as well. He said anything you want to discuss, including dates and subjects, are on the table.” He concluded, “Please confirm that works for you.”
“Works for me,” Cohen said.

Но избирательная кампания давно закончилась, Пападопулос открыто сотрудничает со следствием, и слежка за Пейджем тоже давно не секрет -- так что разоблачение сексота тревожит не Трампа, а тех, кто под него копал и копает: Коми, при котором открыли дело, Мюллера, который продолжает следствие, и СМИ, каждый день ожидающие, что наконец-то им предъявят ужасный сговор между Трампом и Путиным.
Так на каком основании ФБР запустил сексота в избирательную кампанию оппозиционного кандидата? Потому что Пападопулос в пьяном виде сказал австралийскому послу, что у ФСБ есть материалы на Клинтоншу?

В октябре 2016, когда началась прослушка Картера Пейджа, Пейдж уже не работал в избирательной кампании Трампа. "FISA was not used to spy on Trump or his campaign. As the Trump campaign and Page have acknowledged, Page ended his formal affiliation with the campaign months before DOJ applied for a warrant."

Кстати, Рейган Горбачёву ничего подобного не говорил. Во всяком случае, тому нет никаких доказательств. А вот Обама говорил -- и никто его за это не расследовал.

В 2012 у Путина не было ни тех информационных возможностей, что в 2016, ни интереса в том, чтобы поддерживать Ромни. Поэтому его наскоки Обаму совершенно не интересовали.

Но даже когда мы расходились, это было в корректной форме: во‑первых, в уважительной форме, и, во‑вторых, с разъяснением аргументов. Я ему говорил: «Знаешь, Барак, вот это я сделать могу, а это не могу». И он мне то же самое говорил: «Вот это я могу сделать сейчас, а здесь меня будет мучить, например, Конгресс, и это решение будет очень трудно провести».
