Накануне показаний Питера Строка в Конгрессе Рэчел Мэддоу напомнила о Ghost Stories - операции контрразведки ФБР по выявлению внедренных в США агентов СВР, которая вдохновила популярный телесериал The Americans.

The SVR was in it for the long haul. The illegals were content to wait decades to obtain their objective, which was to develop sources of information in U.S. policymaking circles.
Although they didn’t achieve that objective, the agent said, “without us there to stop them, given enough time they would have eventually become successful.”
After years of gathering intelligence and making sure we knew who all the players were, we arrested the illegals on June 27, 2010. Weeks later, they pled guilty in federal court to conspiring to serve as unlawful agents of the Russian Federation within the U.S.
The plea represented the culmination of a remarkable effort on the part of countless Bureau personnel, including agents, analysts, surveillance teams, linguists, and others.
“Operation Ghost Stories sends a message to foreign intelligence services that espionage threats to the U.S. will not be tolerated,” our agent said. “The FBI’s counterintelligence mission is to identify, disrupt, and defeat the activities of foreign espionage agents, and we take that job very seriously.”

Благодаря успешной работе над этой и другими подобными операциями Строк заслужил повышение по службе и стал руководителем отдела контрразведки в Вашингтоне.

Вчерашние показания в Конгрессе, как и ожидались, затянулись на весь день (9 часов) и превратились в клоунаду. Если что и удивило, это то, насколько спокойно и уверенно держался Строк под обстрелом - можно было подумать, что он занимается таким каждый день.

Республиканцы во главе с Бобом Гудлатте и Треем Гауди попытались навесить на Строка дело о неуважении к Конгрессу из-за того, что он, следуя инструкции ФБР, отказался отвечать на вопросы о текущем расследовании Рашагейта. Пока что этот маневр удалось отвести в сторону. Демократы в комиссии немедленно напомнили, что Стив Бэннон - уже не сотрудник администрации, а частный гражданин, тупо отказывался отвечать на вопросы того же Гауди, когда давал показания в Конгрессе за закрытыми дверями. Они потребовали вызвать Бэннона для дачи открытых показаний.

Today, Democratic Members of both the Judiciary and Oversight and Government Reform Committees wrote to Chairmen Bob Goodlatte and Trey Gowdy to enforce their right to a hearing with Steve Bannon. Under House Rule XI clause 2(j)(1), Minority Members have the right to demand a day of hearings to allow witnesses to testify on the subject of a current hearing. During today’s hearing, Republicans from both committees opposed Rep. Eric Swalwell’s motion to subpoena Steve Bannon for testimony related to his involvement with law enforcement actions before, during, and after the 2016 election.
