В тот же день на другом конце планеты, в штате Нью-Гэмпшир, проходило сборище республиканцев Freedom Summit, которое рассматривалось комментаторами, как смотрины кандидатов на президентские выборы 2016. В конференции несколько неожиданно принял участие Дональд Трамп и выступил с зажигательной речью. С особым энтизазмом аудитория встретила его нападки на иммигрантов, что подсказало заглавную тему его предстоящей президентской кампании.

О международных делах он тоже высказался.

“Well, he’s done an amazing job of taking the mantle," Trump said of Russian president Vladimir Putin in an interview with Fox News' Eric Bolling. "And he’s taken it away from the president, and you look at what he’s doing. And so smart. When you see the riots in a country because they’re hurting the Russians, okay, ‘We’ll go and take it over.’ And he really goes step by step by step, and you have to give him a lot of credit."

Справедливости ради, вплоть до лета 2014 (боинга MH17) восхищение Путиным не было для правых пропагандистов чем-то необычным. Джон Стюарт недоумевал по поводу этого увлечения и издевался над ним в своей передаче в марте 2014.

You would think they'd appreciate a more assertive approach considering that the new conservative darling is none other than Vladimir Putin. Last year, Pat Buchanan said Putin is headed straight for the Nobel Peace Prize.
He said this. I know it sounds crazy. But to be fair they give those to just about anybody these days. So it could happen.
But it's not just Pat. Rudy Giuliani said Putin is what you call a leader. Mike Huckabee and Sean Hannity keep talking about his bare chest, which is kind of weird.
