TRUMP: When he [James B. Comey] brought it [the dossier] to me, I said this is really made-up junk. I didn’t think about anything. I just thought about, man, this is such a phony deal.
HABERMAN: You said that to him?
TRUMP: I said, this is — honestly, it was so wrong, and they didn’t know I was just there for a very short period of time. It was so wrong, and I was with groups of people. It was so wrong that I really didn’t, I didn’t think about motive. I didn’t know what to think other than, this is really phony stuff.
SCHMIDT: Why do you think — why do you think he shared it?
TRUMP: I think he shared it so that I would — because the other three people left, and he showed it to me.
TRUMP: So anyway, in my opinion, he shared it so that I would think he had it out there.
SCHMIDT: As leverage?
TRUMP: Yeah, I think so. In retrospect. In retrospect.

В 2014 было сломано много копий при обсуждении того, правильно ли вели себя украинские власти во время захвата Крыма и Донбаса "зелеными человечками". Зная, по какому сценарию пошли события, легко давать непрошеные советы, оглядываясь назад. Но понятно, что, когда события происходили в реальном времени, реагировать на них приходилось мгновенно, готовясь при этом к наихудшему сценарию. Наихудшим считался сценарий полномасштабного вторжения российской армии по лекалам "операции по принуждения к миру" в Грузии 2008. Просчитались ли украинские власти, пытаясь понять намерения Путина и готовясь к наихудшему сценарию? Историю уже не переиграть.



В увлекательной заглавной статье нового номера журнала Time рассказывается о том, как администрация Обамы вела борьбу с атакой путинских хакеров на американские выборы. Можно усмотреть параллели с "зелеными человечками" из 2014. Посколько события развивались быстро и было трудно предугадать, по какому сценарию они пойдут, готовились к наихудшему сценарию. Наихудшим был сценарий вмешательства в системы голосования и подсчета голосов, который позволил бы объявить американские выборы фальшивыми и подорвать к ним доверие. Подготовка к наихудшему сценарию, который так и не осуществился, отвлекла силы от борьбы с российским влиянием в кампании Трампа. Похоже, что Путин снова применил коронный прием: замахнувшись топором, пырять ножом.

A senior intelligence official tells TIME that while the cybersecurity officials at the FBI, DHS and the White House may have been scrambling to secure the vote throughout the fall, the counterintelligence operation at the bureau aimed at uncovering whether the Russian operation was trying to aid Trump only really began in earnest once the election was over. Given the focus of FBI cyber and counterintelligence officials on Hillary Clinton's emails, this looks like a spectacular blunder in retrospect. The Russia counterintelligence probe "never got any intelligence legs until after the election," the senior official says, "because I don't think anybody believed Trump would win, so nobody really put a lot of stock into the Russian attempts [to help him]."
