Комиссия по разведке Палаты представителей Конгресса отменила все свои заседания на этой неделе.

The House Intelligence Committee has scrapped all meetings this week amid growing partisan rancor now threatening to derail its investigation into Russia and the Trump campaign. The full committee meetings were canceled amid an increasingly tense back-and-forth that intensified over Chairman Devin Nunes' decision to cancel a public hearing set for Tuesday, two sources on the committee told CNN.

Руководство демократического меньшинства в Конгрессе, а также демократы в комисссии требуют отставки Нунеса.

For the sake of our duty to independently find the truth, and for the sake of his ability to chair the committee in its other important duties, he should recuse himself from our committee's Russia investigation.”

Политически республиканцы загнаны в развилку. Либо им нужно уступить требованиям (отстранить Нунеса, создать независимую комиссию) либо упорствовать и терять поддержку независимых избирателей. Посмотрим, что они выберут.

Предшественником Девина Нунеса на посту председателя Комиссии по разведке был бывший конгрессмен из Мичигана Майк Роджерс. Сейчас Роджерс работает на CNN, в том числе ведущим цикла передач "Declassified: Untold Stories of American Spies". Первая передача цикла была про Александра Огородника, агента ЦРУ "Трианон" в МИД СССР, послужившего прототипом героя романа Юлия Семенова "ТАСС уполномочен заявить..."

Новая статья Роджерса в WSJ говорит об опасности российской информационной войны.

Imagine an American senator who vocally advocates a new strategic-forces treaty with European allies. Moscow, feeling threatened, launches a directed information campaign to undermine the senator. His emails are breached and published, disclosing personal details and family disputes, alongside draft policy papers without context. Social media is spammed with seemingly legitimate comments opposing the senator’s position. The senator’s phone lines are flooded with robocalls. Fake news articles are pushed out on Russian-controlled media suggesting that the senator has broken campaign-finance laws.
Can you imagine the disruption to American society? The confusion in the legislative process? The erosion of trust in democracy? Unfortunately, this is the reality the U.S. faces, and without a concerted effort it will get worse.
Congress is too focused on the trees to see the frightening forest. Rather than engaging in sharp-edged partisanship, lawmakers should be investigating Russian propaganda operations and information warfare. They should be figuring out how to reduce the influence of foreign trolls, and teaching Americans about Moscow’s capabilities. That would go a long way to save the republic.
